Coach of the Year:

John King, Head Coach, Longview

After Longview’s thrilling come-from-behind victory over Beaumont West Brook to win the Class 6-A, Division II State Championship, I sent out a tweet saying no one could ever understand what that moment meant to the Longview football fans, it had been a long and excruciating journey for a program that’s been as consistent as anyone in Texas, for YEARS.  But, it was really just a matter of time because Lobos head coach John King kept his program on the cusp of greatness from the day he took over for mentor Pat Collins. King has compiled a spectacular 168-36 overall record, winning 84 of 90 district games, 13 district championships and a playoff appearance in each of his fifteen seasons. And, now, finally after 81-years, finally after watching so many programs around them win a state championship or more, finally, the Lobos have another state championship trophy. It couldn’t happen for a better coach and more importantly a better man and friend than John King.

This is my 38th-year covering Texas High School Football and I’m continually blown away by how the torch of greatness is passed on from one year to the next. And, I’m a firm believer in recognizing all three phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams.

Of course there will be the playmakers on offense and defense, the stars who earn the weekly and annual awards, but what about those who are far too often overlooked, including a deep snapper on field goals and extra points or the dirty work of a player who covers on kick and punt returns. And, so we hope you enjoy as we honor the elite of the elite in East Texas.
